Winter, who still resides at the Aquarium, played herself in the original film and returns in "DT2" and Hope will play herself in the sequel.

Dolphin Tale is a 2011 family drama film directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Karen Janszen and Noam Dromi and a book of the same name. The movie  stars Harry Connick, Jr., Ashley Judd, and Morgan Freeman.

The book and film are inspired by the amazing true story of Winter, a bottlenose dolphin that was rescued in December 2005 off the Florida coast and taken in by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Winter lost her tail after becoming entangled with a rope attached to a crab trap and was fitted with a prosthetic one.
Winter's story of courage, perseverance and hope has touched millions.  She was found with an injured tail and was then taken to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium for treatment and rehabilitation. It was then discovered that the damage done to her tail was irreversible. The doctors at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium saved Winter's life by giving her a new prosthetic tail.
